DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOR THERAPY

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy that was originally developed to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, it has since been adapted to be effective for various other mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and substance abuse.

DBT* combines acceptance and change strategies to help clients manage emotions, improve relationships, and regulate behavior. It involves structured therapy sessions, skills training, coaching, and consultation teams. The therapy includes four modules:

  1. Mindfulness: Enhances awareness and acceptance of present experiences

  2. Distress Tolerance: Teaches coping techniques for crises and intense emotions.

  3. Emotion Regulation: Helps understand and manage emotions effectively.

  4. Interpersonal Effectiveness: Improves communication and relationship skills.

DBT progresses through stages, focusing initially on behavioral control and safety, then on emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness. It's collaborative, with therapist-client goal setting. The goal is to build a fulfilling life by developing coping skills and improving relationships.
