Our Journey Together

Kurt Droste and Sarah Kemp met as Residents in Counseling during the early years of their clinical careers — a season shaped by supervision, intensive learning, long hours, and the responsibility of becoming the kind of clinicians they believed the profession deserved. Their connection formed quickly through conversation, curiosity, and a shared desire to keep improving. Both were deeply invested in learning and drawn toward growth in a way that felt uncommon. As self-described “fellow nerds,” they spent countless hours exchanging ideas, discussing leadership, exploring clinical concepts, and learning from anyone willing to share knowledge — including one another. Kurt often jokes that he initially thought Sarah was a “know-it-all,” largely because she always seemed to have a new concept, research article, or perspective to discuss. Sarah, meanwhile, was surprised to learn that Kurt was serving on active duty in the United States Marine Corps while also pursuing counseling — a combination she found remarkable. Over time, they realized they shared a similar perspective about the future of behavioral health care. Both believed the profession carries immense responsibility, and that meaningful care requires more than good intentions. It requires strong ethics, thoughtful leadership, intellectual humility, clinical accountability, and a willingness to continually refine both systems and self. Many of their conversations centered around what Sarah later described as “better than syndrome” — the tendency for individuals or organizations to settle into what feels acceptable simply because it appears preferable to something worse, instead of asking what could become healthier, more sustainable, more connected, and more effective. That shared philosophy became foundational in both their relationship and their professional vision. Together, they challenged one another to keep learning, make thoughtful changes, take meaningful risks, and hold themselves to higher standards. Ironically, one of Kurt’s earliest comments to Sarah was, “You work too much,” a phrase that has since become a familiar and affectionate joke throughout their life together. In August 2025, Kurt and Sarah married, formalizing a partnership already rooted in trust, friendship, shared vision, and mutual respect. Today, both describe their work and life together as deeply fulfilling — the rare opportunity to build alongside one’s best friend while contributing to work that carries genuine meaning and responsibility. That vision helped shape All Points North Counseling Services, strengthen the partnership with Kemp Psychological Services, and inspire the broader mission of the Kemp Foundation for Clinical Stewardship. Today, APNC’s integrated model includes counseling services, psychological assessment through Kemp Psychological Services, and psychiatric medication management through APNC’s clinical team — all designed to provide a more connected and thoughtful standard of behavioral health care. Through the Kemp Foundation for Clinical Stewardship, their work extends beyond direct clinical services into mentorship, clinician development, burnout prevention, workforce sustainability, and the long-term strengthening of the behavioral health profession itself. At its core, their story reflects a shared commitment to building something enduring: a clinical community grounded in stewardship, integrity, growth, and care worthy of the people it serves.
